We stayed at a nice and heavily wooded campground here called Skidaway State Park. I was amazed for the first time on our trip there was hardly anyone here at the campground. Just a few hardy types like us!
I am sure during the summer heat having a heavily wooded spot like this protects one from the heat of the hardy afternoon sun. However as much as it looks very neat when you drive in after about 3 nights of it, I am dying to get out into some sun light.
It seemed a bit eerry at first with all the big oak trees and the long Spanish Moss hanging off almost every branch. also there were these long thin branches hanging down looking like something Tarzan would swing to his next tree on. My bet is this would be a good place to film a horror movie.
There were lots of old homes and some stately mansions but it wasn't the same. The downtown area had a lot of closed shops that were empty perhaps a hangover from the recent recession? Some areas seemed a little dirty and the buildings down there just didn't have the same character.
One thing we did do here was have some great BBQ!
In fact we took it home as a take-out had BBQ Ribs two nights in a row! It was real good southern style!
Another good thing I would really recommend is Paula Dean's. You may know who she is. She had a cooking show and a little bit of controversy over the last while. At any rate she sure is a good cook and so is her staff.
She has two restaurants here and one is called A Lady and Her Two Sons or something like that. It is right downtown next to her store. We went in to catch a little desert treat. What a cool place. We were sent up to the 3rd floor of the place on an elevator. seated there we made our orders.
After looking at the menu we had to deviate a little bit. The original plan was to have some Key Lime pie, one of our favorites. Once I saw they had Pecan Pie we added some ice cream to that and ordered that as well. Once both pies arrived we promptly say them in the middle and shared what I would call the best I have ever had!
I have never in my life tasted a Key Lime or a Pecan pie like that! In fact if I was younger I would have ordered two more of them! They were of sufficient size to fill us up and we waddled out of there like a couple of old fat folk from the south. Fun and food! I love it! My only wish is that we could have stayed and had dinner too.
So after walking around downtown for a while we wandered back to our car. It was now rush hour and the traffic had increased measurably. As we got to the street our Honda was no longer where we left it! In fact neither were any other cars!
All that I could think of was "well, welcome to Savannah!
I was convinced we had a fine to pay and a tow truck fee to boot.
As it turned out our car was still there... we were just two blocks west of where we had left it. The street there looks almost the same on every block. Thankfully it hadn't been towed.
After 3 nights here in Savannah that was about all we needed. It was time to move along again and start heading into Florida.

FLORIDA BOUND!
Well we got up, we had coffee, we read email and yes we finally packed up. Finally hitting the road at about 130pm.
We have made it to the sunny state of Florida and are staying in another of Jim's favorites "Wal-Mart!"
Don't ask us what town we are in we do not know however we do know we are on the north side of Jacksonville.
BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES!
If I recall correctly this saying came from the old sailing days of large wooden British ships going back and forth with their wares. When the seas got rough or the rains came they would seal the hatches with cotton batting. We decided to as well!
Last night while watching TV an alert came on. One of those little messages that pops up in the bottom corner of the screen saying "Weather Alert." This one was for flooding along the coast line of the Atlantic from where we were down into Florida where we were about to go in the morning.
We didn't see any rain until we had been on the highway for some time and it wasn't that bad. Once we got into Wal-Mart here for the night it picked up along with the winds. It seems at times there can be a High - High Tide. If you add a good rain storm along with that apparently flooding may be an issue.
Being the good Sailors that we are (remember that sailing course we took) we felt secure that we had sealed the hatches!
As it turned out later on this evening we found out that was not to be the case. Similar to what had occurred a few days back we found a wet floor. Trying to figure out where it is coming from is quite another story. I think after some heavy investigating I have it narrowed down and the suspect is some debris stuck under the seal of the living room where it slides out. So soon I will be crawling up there with a ladder and a broom to see if we can cure this ill. If not I am sure we will have a chance to search for the culprit again during the next rain storm.
On Wednesday we will be moving into what looks like a very nice camp spot. We try to view the Wal-Mart parking lots with satellite views and we did the same with this campground because it is right on the beach.
Sorry no pictures for this post, the program we use is acting up a bit and I'm getting tired. It's now 11pm and the Wal-Martians come early. Barb is already sound asleep and I need my beauty sleep too.
I think we are really going to like this camp spot and hopefully this town of Jacksonville too.
We will let you know!
Ciao!
