Tuesday October 22, 2013 – No Technology – Yikes! Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Close friends of ours had parents that travelled south in the winters well into their 80’s. As I recall the stories they did it mostly in a tent and went to Arizona every year as long as they could. I always admired that and hope that we can do it that long too.

I think of my Gramma’s and Dad’s stories. When he was a young boy they moved from a farm in southern Alberta up to homestead between Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer, Alberta. When they did this they had Hired Men to do the cattle drive and their motorhome was nothing more than a covered wagon with wooden wheels, stopping each night along the way.

Several of the cattle died along the way from breaking their legs in gopher holes. They lived in these covered wagons until just before the snow came that fall while the men built the new family home. The stories are just like the cowboy days and campfires of years gone by.

I’m sitting here just south of Myrtle Beach in a state campground near the ocean in my motorhome – its perfect.
Here we are with all the comforts of home and last night we panicked!

You might be asking why did you panic?

Well after we got set up (fun times backing this rig into a camp stall in the dark) we realized that we had no service for our mobile Wi-Fi!

Yes it is true… the times have changed and it almost embarrasses me to say we panicked over this!

The next thought was; will we have TV reception here if there is no Wi-Fi?
Sure enough we fired up the TV and whew… we did have plenty of TV channels to choose from. Thank goodness!

So as I ponder this I can’t help to wonder; if we as Baby Boomers are this addicted to having the internet at hand, what must our children feel? What will it be like for them when they are our age? What about our Grandchildren?

We are so connected in this day & age that now we panic over not having internet when we are camping! No wonder I don’t read books anymore. No wonder I don’t even remember how to truly relax!

So with my laptop open this morning I thought I would do the next best thing to the internet and that’s to write down some of my thoughts and observations.

We are closing in quickly on finishing our second month on this trip (25%).
We have covered so many miles I am getting places confused and mixed up and others I don’t even remember unless Barb reminds me or I stop to look at the pictures that we have taken.

There are so many good memories though. Memories of New York City, one of my favorite spots so far. The campground in Wisconsin, so relaxing and quiet. The first time we actually saw the Atlantic Ocean on this trip and so on.

They all add up into memories but at this age I fear I am losing space in the old cranial cavity so as to have to be reminded of some.

I’m thankful for digital cameras!
We can take so many pictures now a-days that we don’t have to worry about the cost of film or having the pictures developed only to find out some of them didn’t even turn out the way we had hoped. Delete, delete! More pictures are added and edited. The memories for me are now stored this way. I go back and I look at the photo albums on my laptop and there they are, sweet memories.

So where am I going with all this you ask?
I have no idea! It just struck me as I was sitting here that technology has become such a big thing in our lives we panic when something doesn’t work or connect, even when we are camping!

I think of our visit to the town of Mayberry a couple of days ago. If you have never seen this show please go to that link that I posted recently and watch a few episodes. Those were fun simple times and we could all relate.

Neighbors cared for neighbors and their children too.
TV was a fairly new invention and many of us grew up watching it in black and white. Color wasn’t available in the early years and wasn’t an affordable option for some families including mine.

Have we forgotten how to really relax?
I can’t remember the last time I read a book but I have two with me that I have promised myself I will read on this trip. It’s like it has become work to slow down enough to stop and relax!

As we travel through some of these small towns especially here in the south I have seen many people sitting on their front porches in their rocking chairs or on their swings. Family time and relaxing on the front porch almost seems to be a thing of the past for many of us.

I spent the majority of my life in the rat-race.
Running here and running there. First as a policeman and then in my racing business, then selling diesel engines and then in my real estate business. It always came down to “how much can you accomplish” in one day. If you couldn’t get it done you simply worked longer hours or worked even harder.

When we toured Europe for a few months in 2009/10 they taught me a lesson too. I’m afraid I have already forgotten what I learned. In many of those countries they simply shut down their businesses for an hour or a few every single afternoon. Why did they do this? I think it comes down to getting one’s priorities in order.

There’s an old saying that we should be “Working to Live” not “Living to Work.”

Sure I may be retired now and it might seem easy for me to say all this sitting here in my motorhome but one of the demons I always battle is “what can I accomplish?”

Since retiring from the RCMP I have always moved on (more than once) to another business or project to make it work and to make it happen, with out even stopping to relax and smell the flowers. Call it a bad habit or a disease of modern man but I think many of us (certainly men) suffer from this. We just don’t know how to slow down or how to relax and smell those roses!

How many times in your life have you seen people work past their retirement age? Only to have a heart attack and die shortly thereafter! Is that fair after they have worked for so long and so hard? Is it because they stopped working and boom their bodies didn’t know how to react?

I know I am starting to ramble, but these are my thoughts for today… Sorry!

In today’s rat-race that we all suffer from we need to find ways to relax.
If we are retiring we need to find hobbies or other activities that we enjoy to help us relax and pass the time. If we are young or middle aged still working we have to remember what is important and get back to the basics – our family time, our down time - Enjoy the day!

It seems to me with what I have read in studies that we have almost become addicted to the adrenalin or some other “high” that we naturally receive when we are go-go all the time. We all need (especially me) to break the addiction and get back to the basics of life to really enjoy it. After all we really aren’t here all that long. Compare your life expectancy to that of eternity!

So as much as I am sharing this with you I am really sharing it and telling these things to myself too. You likely view me as sitting here living the retired life of travel and wondering why I am digging into this topic.

I am saying that after 2 winters of this and now into our third, I don’t think I have really found what it is that brings true relaxation and the associated enjoyment. I ask myself; “have I really stopped to smell the roses?”

That is going to be my project this winter, re-wiring my life to really relax!

So… the next time we have no internet connection I am not going to panic.
I refuse to!

I will sit and count the stars or open and book and read until my eyelids slam shut. I will force myself to really relax and enjoy life, the way it was really meant to be!

I hope that you will too. J

UPDATE: October 24, 2013.
I read a book the other day, can you beleive it!
I read it in one day! I enjoyed it so much I couldn’t put it down!

Or, is it that I just can’t seem to stop when I start something ha,ha,ha!

Monday October 21, 2013

After flying back we stayed at our friends place in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. This is basically a suburb of the city of Concord, which is basically a suburb of Charlotte. In the last post you can see that our motorhome was parked in their yard, which is a beautiful little acreage, heavily wooded with rolling hills. Love it there!

I can see why they chose this area to build their family home.

NASCAR RACE SHOPS
One day Jerry, his son Jacob and I went out to visit the race car shops.
If you didn’t know, this is the heart of NASCAR country.
Most of the race teams have their shops and run their operations in the area here. A place where I should have been born and raised! Everyone here knows about NASCAR and most of them are fans.

We started off at the Rick Hendrick shops. Man what a facility. We drove in knowing this was the day they would all be leaving for the next race at Talladega, Alabama.
Hendrick Team - Pit Crew Practice.
These Guys are Pro Athletes and Help the Drivers win Races!

One view of Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Papa Joe Hendrick has his own street!
We started off going out back where they have mock pits set up and the race teams were practicing pit stops. Most people do not know or understand that this really is a team sport and the performance in the pits by the teams often determines who wins or loses during a race. These guys are fit! The looked like a bunch of pro football players in practice wearing their uniform T-shirts, shorts and protective gear.
The guy with his back to you is the Pit Crew Coach.
He makes sure these guys are trained, fit, fast and ready for race day!

After a mock pit stop.
The coach goes over the results, what went right. what went wrong.
Being able to change four tires, fuel up with gas and making adjustments in under 14 seconds takes dedication and athletes that are fit and highly trained. They have an outdoor Gym and an indoor Gym as well where they spend their days practicing and getting ready for the next race.
Jacob trying his hand at the wheel!
Although we weren’t able to go right inside the shops we were able to watch from a viewing area and the back doors where the mechanics and tuners work on all the team cars. Inside of these shops is something to see. As clean as any hospital with all of the latest and hi tech equipment known to man.
As I write this Jimmie Johnson (48) is in first place for points.
Only 3 more races to go this season!
He is Jim's pick for the Championship.
Another item to note is that many times the car manufacturers are involved with these teams developing technology into our daily drivers. Yes, you might be driving a car that has technology developed from a NASCAR race team!

We visited the shops of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and many of the other top teams.
Chase Elliott (son of Bill Elliott) runs out of this shop also.
One of Chase Elliott's haulers getting ready to leave for the track.

Jeff Gordon's cars run out of the Hendrick shop.
Sorry bad picture through the glass.
Along the way Jerry knew where Daryl Waltrip had his shop. He is now an Anchorman and announcer for NASCAR TV.

We stopped in there. Daryl also owns a house next to the shop. We went inside and the man working there told us to just go ahead and go in the back (all by ourselves). Although it is no longer a race shop it held Daryl’s collection of racecars from over the years and a bunch of memorabilia such as helmets and racing suits from the decades gone by.

Along with all that Daryl also runs an on-line souvenir business from there as well. If you don’t know who he is he was one of the famous drivers from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s having won many races and well known in the racing world. I met his brother Michael once who also runs in NASCAR.
An old short track car Daryl Waltrip used to run.

One of Daryls old Gatorade cars.
Anyone familiar with Nascar in days gone by will remember this one.

Daryl's farewell tour car.

Another old Daryl Waltrip Cup Car

The Tide car that Daryl drove won a lot of races!

We also stopped by Roush-Fenway Racing’s shops and Richard Petty’s shops as well.
Ricky Stenhouse Sprint Cup car.

One of Carl Edward's cars in the middle.

The shops need to be as clean as a hospital as seen here.

Some days are better than others for the teams.
That car is heavy!
Jerry is a retired Deputy Sheriff from this area and knows several of the team members and even some of the drivers. He through his contacts was able to score me a couple of team hats and was I ever appreciative. These are hats that are actually worn by the team members not the one’s that you buy in the stores.

In fact Jerry even had an old used NASCAR Cup car sitting out back that had been used in a movie (I can’t remember which one, perhaps Days of Thunder?). How cool is that!
You know you are in NASCAR country when you find these in the back 40!

D.J. Tucker was the name of the driver in the movie.
This was a real Sprint Cup car used in the movie.
This car was in a wreck in the movie it was used in - can you tell?
If you know me very well you will know that I have been active in stock car racing since the age of 15 years old working on teams over the years and a race driver most years since the age of 16. Having Jerry take me to tour through these shops and areas was certainly one of the highlights of my trip and will be remembered for the rest of my life!

MAYBERRY and The ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW!
On another day we all jumped into the car and went to Mayberry!
Some of you might not know what this is. If you are old enough to remember the TV show “Andy Griffith” you will remember the town he was from and that was Mayberry. This was Jim's favorite TV show as a child for many years.

This town is actually called Mount Airy, North Carolina.

The film’s location was based on where Andy Griffith grew up which in the show they called Mayberry. I was even able to get a “Goober” hat!
Goober!
We had lots of fun here with our friends Jennifer, Jerry and Jacob. The show was actually filmed in Hollywood but they used props and replicas of this little town such as Floyd’s Barber Shop, Wally's Garage where Goober worked and Snappy’s Café where we actually had lunch.
Wally's real garage!

A replica of one of Andy's Police cars.
You can go for tours around town in these.
This show had a cult following in its day and is still shown regularly on some of the TV channels around.

I grew up watching the Andy Griffith Show and for many of us in my generation it is a symbol of simpler times and a place where everyone would have loved to live.
Barney was the Deputy Sheriff and full of laughs!

Goober in his Tow Truck!

The real Police Chief!

Jerry gets thrown in jail & Jim won't let him out!

You can stay in the real home where Andy Griffith grew up.
The little boy in the show was named Opie. If you didn’t know this, in real life his name is Ron Howard who grew up to be an actor but most notably one of Hollywood’s greatest Directors and Producers.

Ahh… the good old days!

Spending time at Jennifer and Jerry’s was great. They are old friends from Cochrane. It was great to spend time with them and enjoy the local lifestyle, which included Pork Sandwiches and Chocolate Malts.
Our friends the Wallaces.
From Left: Jerry, Jennifer and Jacob.

Even the girls had fun in Mayberry!

On the morning before we left I went out back with Jacob and we did some Target shooting with his 22 rifle. I hadn’t shot a gun since I retired from the police force and enjoyed it immensely. I must say Jacob would make a great sniper! Wow can that boy hit a target!

Finally the time had arrived where we had to move on. It was hard to leave as we had enjoyed our time so much here with our friends.

So on Saturday October 19th we had to get going because we have so much to cover between now and when we meet with family in Orlando, Florida on November 10th

I am quite sure we will be back some day and will likely coordinate it with a NASCAR race at Charlotte. Jennifer & Jerry have been warned and very graciously have opened their doors to us anytime we want to come. Now that’s southern hospitality!

EAST COAST BOUND - AGAIN!
On Saturday we headed SE out towards the coast. We didn’t make it too far as we were tired and ate getting away. We ended up in a suburb of Wilmington, NC and you guessed it camped at a local Wal-Mart. This was perfect, as we needed to stock up on some supplies as well.

Speaking of Wal-Marts and I’m sure this topic will excite you.
We have seen Wal-Marts of every size and color. The one here in Wilmington was PINK! We have seen others that were green, blue and a few other colors too? Makes me wonder if they are testing colors to see which one works best? Now you really do know that I am retired and have very little else to think about!

SOUTH PORT, NORTH CAROLINA
Stop here if you are in the area!
On Sunday October 20th we ended up in a little coastal town called Southport, NC.

If you recall the movie “Safe Haven” this is the town in that movie.
We would recommend you watch this movie, I am sure you can rent it and we know it is on Net Flix for free.

WATCH TRAILER HERE:
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/safe-haven-2013/

Also if you recall the movie “Cape Fear” - I have no idea if it was filmed here, Hahaha.

Cape Fear was an old movie but there was also a re-make in recent years. Cape Fear is located here at Southport.

Another famous piece of information that will change your life is that Pirates including Blackbeard supposedly hid out here as well!

In fact a guy we met here who was beach-combing told us that last month a Gold Dubloon was found here washed up on the beach. This was more than likely from one of the Pirate Ships.

Southport is a beautiful little town. Its almost one taken out of time.

No one here locks up their bicycles and it seems so quiet and safe here for a beach town. A lot of colonial looking homes are located here making it scenic. The quiet little streets and scenery makes one feel we are really in the south now.

Barb went in to the Visitor Center here when we rolled into town. We did this for the usual reasons plus we needed to find out where we could stay and where we could get fresh water as we were out.
Barb sitting at the Visitor Center - Just enjoying life.
As there was nowhere that they knew off to get water they offered to let us use their garden hose and so we did! Add to that there are no overnight parking restrictions and no campgrounds here so we parked right at the oceans edge on the street. As I have said before there is no better air than the air when camped on the ocean! We love it!
Camped on the street on the ocean shore.
As we were sitting here on the ocean’s edge a large yacht pulled in and dropped anchor right in front of us out in the water. Low and behold it is proudly flying a Canadian flag! I don’t know who this is but boy do they have toys! This yacht must be the better part of 100 feet in length. I told Barb it was probably Celine Dion!
Some Canadians have too much money!
So that updates us today and as I step outside the rig here parked at the beach people are doing Yoga outside over at the Community Center across the street and cars are starting to show up parking all around us.

One thing I have noticed is Golf Carts driving around town. Rand McNally recommends Southport as one of the best places in the USA to retire so I am sure there are a lot of retired residents living here. I have noticed Golf Carts on the streets in several other towns as well.

Yesterday I sent a message to one of the people I think may win the Mayoralty race back home in Cochrane (Vote today!) asking if they have considered this idea? Personally I think it would save on the local concerns such as parking spaces, the environment and help with things like the continual hike in gas prices. Plus it would be a fun way to go get groceries when the weather is right!
Southport Marina

Beautiful beaches and Boardwalks everywhere!

Today (Monday, October 21) we will hang out again in Southport.
Our travel schedule has lightened up a lot since before our trip back home and we can relax a bit. Who knows maybe we will have lunch at Fishy-Fishy a restaurant that was used in that movie “Safe Haven.”

Tuesday October 15th, 2013 – Flying Back to the USA

Before I get to our flight back home I have a little story...

On our way down to see our friends (the Wallace's) who live just outside of Charlotte, NC we as earlier noted, drove through several states from New York and Jersey City.

One of my highlites was going down this little paved country road and seeing a sign for Martinsville (Virginia) - 40 miles!

Barb didn't know the significance of this but it has always been one of my favorite historic NASCAR race tracks. So we continued on and get this - The track was right in town on the same road we were on!

As we drove by the track a race was on!
There were Police & Sheriff's everywhere for traffic control and tons of cars parked there. I said to Barb "this is just too good to be true!"

I went down the street and turned the rig around and went back to the track. We pulled in following the signs for parking. Then we saw a sign for camping so we followed those. We drove in right past the camping registration, there was no one there. Next thing I know we are in the camping area behind the back straight-a-way and able to watch the race that was on. It wasn't perfect but it was free!
Martinsville - A Historic NASCAR Race Track!
This was incredible timing for Jim!
Barb fired up the oven and baked a pizza and I watched the last bit of the race and it was over. Thank you Martinsville!
When you love NASCAR as much as Jim does - WOW!
The end of the race.

CALGARY TO CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA!
Our flight today (October 15th) was at 7am, which means one has to be at the airport at 5am! I’m not sure but I am wondering if this should be illegal!

After we thought about it for a bit we decided to stay at a hotel near the Calgary airport so that we didn’t have to drive in from Cochrane at such an ugly hour. So we stayed at the Acclaim Hotel, which wasn’t too bad. It always amazes me - the price they charge! I know I’m whining!

So we got up at 430am at the hotel and got the 5am shuttle over to the airport down the road, which worked out very well. I love my NEXUS Card! It sure makes things easier with Customs and Immigration.

While we were back home for the week it was a bit of a Rat Race.
It didn’t help that we were tired out by the time we got there. Must be something to do with aging? On the first day home I had to rush to downtown Calgary to get a new Passport ordered.

I had realized while we were already in the US last trip that mine expires in February! Yikes! Dummy me; didn’t notice, so of course an extra fee was charged for the rush on the new passport. At any rate this time I was able to get a ten-year passport and they had it ready at 12 noon on Friday as promised. The Canadian passport system has come a long way over the years, I can remember waiting months back a few years ago!

After that lets just say there was lots going on with family visits, Doctor appointments and more. But it was still very enjoyable even though we were pooped out!

We went to a wedding and I (Jim) was the M.C.
The wedding was a great time. Seeing old friends and the views from the Gleneagles Golf Course of the Rocky Mountains are spectacular! The Bride a daughter and friend looked spectacular and so was the wedding! We had a great time.

The beautiful Bride and her Father coming down the isle!

The views from here (our Home) at Gleneagles Golf Course.

The Wedding Car!
Tim's beautifully restored 1971 GMC.
We had a couple of great visits with family too. Right before we left for the Calgary hotel we were invited to a neighbor party with friends on our little street and that was the icing on the cake to a great week!

Nothing like flying on air miles though!
We have American Airlines Air Miles. We have used it for several years now through our Visa Card purchases. It’s a great way to get cheap flights all over, especially to the USA, Mexico and Europe. It helps a lot when you have a limited budget and want to travel like we do.

The funny part is with their system it seems we always have to fly through Dallas/Fort Worth to get anywhere. It doesn’t matter where you are going or coming from DFW will likely always be on your list of stops.

So this time we fly out at 0700 from Calgary down to DFW. We have roughly a 3 hour lay over there and then fly to New York with a quick change of less than an hour and then land at Charlotte, NC our final destination.

It makes one wonder if there are a group of dedicated individuals in a back room somewhere dreaming all of this up? Fly here, fly there and then there and oh yea, we will get you to your destination at the end of it all! I guess I shouldn’t complain at the $70.00 round trip.

One thing I am really grateful for is that I’m not any bigger than I am.
I am certain they have worked diligently with the fishing industry in order to make this all work. What I mean is that they certainly are getting better at squeezing more seats in the planes every time one flies. Sardines anyone!

You always see the commercials and the ads where the happy flying client is seated doing work or viewing a movie on their lap top – right? The reality is that unless they paid huge dollars for first class there is no way this is going to happen!

When seated I cannot even get my laptop to open so that I can see the screen!

There’s not enough room to barley even read a newspaper. Add to that unless you weigh 140 lbs. these seats just don’t fit. It makes you feel like a football player! Even at my size I am twice as wide at the shoulders as these seats are!

Then if you happen to get a meal which on most flights is a thing of the past. Try using a knife and fork! With your elbows tucked in as far as possible and the plate directly below your chin you can’t even see the meal you are about to eat! Maybe that’s a good thing?

So after Thanksgiving weekend let me just say I am thankful I am this size and no larger. Big people probably would rather drive than fly even if it were 3000 miles away!

The other thing that makes me laugh is carry-on luggage.
Since most airlines now seem to charge extra for the first piece of luggage the size of the carry-on luggage is growing at a rate faster than China's population! Some of the ladies have carry-on that is so big they can't even lift it up into the overhead storage bins. Other's seem to be carrying their spouse in some of those bags they are so big. I just love it when I get a seat near the back and there is no room left for my petite little bags!

The other thing I love is sitting in an isle seat. It is more comfy most of the time because at least you have one elbow and shoulder in its natural position. However it seems just as one is able to doze off a little bit someone comes down the isle and bang! The isles are too small, the seats aren't wide enough and well I guess it just helps the airline to make more money?

After a while I feel like I'm a third class passenger in the basement holes of the Titanic just before she sinks! There's no room for normal sized people and no one will let me out!

If I didn't have to re-mortgage my house every time I flew I would certainly fly in First Class. Since I am now retired I have to face it, budgets while travelling are everything. I have been blessed to be able to live this lifestyle and I shouldn't be complaining (reminding myself again!) :)

We finally made it. After two flight changes amongst all the running around and airports it felt like we had travelled to Europe and back again. Jennifer, Jerry and Jacob picked us up at the Charlotte airport and off to bed we went after a quick visit.

Back at our Home at the Wallace Acreage
in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina.
Yes the windows have to be cleaned Jim!
In all seriousness, we have nothing to complain about but it's clear to both of us we are not teen-agers anymore.
Good night y'all!
