Go West Young Man - Go West! Feb 6, 2014.

The other day we met a nice couple from South Carolina.
During our chat we shared what we were doing and how far we were going and that we were in a motor home called "Bounder."

She asked, "well how long do you stay in any one place?"

In true fashion, after one day of New Orleans we packed our bags again this morning (Thursday) and hit the road. We didn't get rolling until about 1130 and just as we did it started to sleet. We made it out hitting highway I-10 westbound!

By this point we were both so sick of the cold, sleet and rain we were seriously considering heading for Arizona as fast as possible and after we did some time there were considering heading home.

A 12 hour drive took us through a few places of interest:

As we left town Barb noticed New Orleans
is 25 feet below sea level!

Some of the sights leaving New Orleans:

A lot of boarded up houses.

A patched roof from Katrina?

The Dome where many stayed after Katrina.

Another of the many old cemeteries.

The Mississippi River!
The day actually turned out to be not too bad after all. Not warm but livable. We continued on west!

Louisiana Sights.

Long bridges across the Bayou

Swamps too!

Welcome to Texas!
We were making pretty good time so we kept on going...

Welcome to Huston!
As it got dark we headed into Huston and all seemed pretty good. We were hoping to have missed rush hour but like with all large cities that wasn't the case. The photo above was taken after we sat in stopped & crawling traffic on the freeway. Finally we got to the front to find there was a small fender bender.

As with our luck the Police arrived just before we got by. We were the first in line and 5 Police cars arrived and stopped all of us! Yikes! A few minutes later we were able to leave and get going again.

We drove through the country getting off the freeways up through Austin and what looked to be some very nice country. Trouble was it was dark and we couldn't see much of it. After Austin (which I hear is a nice city) we ventured west again to a town called Fredericksburg.

It was getting late and we had been on the road for what seemed like forever. Driving the 53 foot Bounder mobile makes me tired especially in heavy traffic. So we decided to call it a day and made Wal-Mart our home. There were a couple of other rigs parked there along with a couple of semi trucks over nighting it too.

The weather forecast overnight is for more rain and ice. We were hoping to beat it out of town in the morning.

That wasn't to happen!
We got up early in hopes of getting a good start on the road but the roads were covered in slick and thick ice. Here we sit again!

After realizing that we had a couple of good friends (two couples) who live back in San Antonio we decided we should stay so that we could get a visit in with them. Both couples used to live back home where we live.

After some discussion we decided it best to get into another campground so Barb the Navigator found us a nice County Camp Ground nearby in town here. A quick look around town reveals this to be a very nice looking place with some western history!

We got into our camp and hooked up and have booked two nights here. Tomorrow (Saturday) we will head over to San Antonio in the car and get a visit in with our good friends. Can't wait to see them!

Until then, I am writing and resting, Good night!

  1. I can't believe the weather you hit in what should have been a nice place to spend winter. Glad you decided to hunker down for a few days (I think that's a Texas term!).
